THE HISTORY OF OUR CLUB

In September 1999, Kempo Jiu Jitsu Sensei Joa Schwinn wanted to add judo to the curriculum at the school. Sensei Schwinn knew that Professor Terry Kelly was head of the judo program at the Santa Rosa Junior College and on the national board of directors for the United States Judo Association. Sensei Schwinn called Professor Kelly and asked if he had anyone who would be willing to come over and run a judo program at the school (which was then known as Santa Rosa Martial Arts). Sensei Robert Pennington arrived and the judo program was established in November 1999. Assisted by Sensei Josh Baum the program started to develop into a small, but solid group of judoka. Sensei Destinee Tartuffe took over when Sensei Pennington retired.

Early on the program was comprised of youth from the community, a few kempo jiu jitsu students, and a small collection of SRJC judo students (the school was then located one block north of the JC campus). Through scheduled events and seminars the program started to gain momentum and a stronger student base. Classes had risen from 3-4 students to 10-15 people on the mat. Connections with other judoka developed.

At one such seminar, Professor Kelly introduced us to Professor Charlie Robinson. Anyone who has ever met Professor Robinson knows what a special person he is. With Professor Kelly's blessing the school adopted Professor Robinson as our benevolent judo guide.

Over time some of the SRJC students began to attend on a regular basis and have since become leaders of the program. Other leaders have joined with the club. The program now enjoys the assistance of numerous black belts and certified instructors.

Judo competition is a regular aspect of the program. The program has enjoyed significant growth over the the last year and there have been some great competitions. Students achieve rank through practice and study. Seminars and camps are woven into the overall training path. We take pride in our judo program, it instructors and assistants, and most certainly the students. Dr. Kano would be proud!
